US HoldemNot Just the Cards
When poker's Doyle Brunson claimed that he could beat that game without even looking at his cards, he is not kidding, or being very proud. What he said is true, even if you find it too surprising.
Most poker players, especially the beginners, focus too much on their cards. They think that they win or lose in poker because of their cards, and not any other factor.
However, we must remember that your hand is just one of the many factors that play significant role in winning or losing a poker game, especially in No Limit Texas Hold'em.
The other factors which some novice poker players fail to consider are the tells, the position and the community cards.
The first one is the tells. Tells are the behaviors of the poker players at the table which give away their true feelings about their own cards.
These can be considered as signs. Poker tells are hard to spot, especially with the more skilled poker players who are very conscious with their body language. Some of the poker experts even wear visors, shades and caps to games to hide their eyes and their face, as a whole.
However, if spotted, tells can be a very dangerous device against your poker opponents. Poker players have different kinds of poker tells. This is why it is very important to hide your emotions or reactions in any poker game, because they can and will be used against you. A tell of one poker player may mean differently to another player. Therefore, be careful in spotting tells, be sure that tells you spotted mean what you think they mean.
The next thing that you should remember in poker is the power of position. In poker, position is very powerful because if you are the first to bet, you could scare early the other poker players at the table by raising the stakes. If you are the last to bet, then you could observe the others' actions before making your own move. You can see who checked, who maybe is not confident with his hand.
The community cards can also help you in beating other poker players without peeking at your own cards. If you know that you are playing against a conservative player, then you may scare him or her by raising as the flop or the turn come up. You can do this when you see that the community cards may form a big hand, a possible straight or flush.
You can scare the tight poker player by bluffing that you have the card that would complete the straight or flush by raising the bet.
