Tell Me Your Tells

It is imperative in poker to hide your emotions so that your opponents will not be able to read your cards or whatever it is that you are planning to do. This is because once they found out and learn your poker tells, you will be easier to beat. Poker tells, for some are important, they can even make you win games, as in the movie Maverick. You might want to be more careful about your own poker tells, so here are the most common poker tells that you might have but you are not aware that you do.

Trembling hands. This is a sign of nervousness or excitement. This poker tell is hard to hide because it's too obvious. However, be careful in interpreting this mannerism when observed in opponents, because it is possible that their hands naturally shake, nervous or not.

Pretentions. poker players do the opposite of what they really feel so that their opponents will be misguided. They act disinterested when they are actually excited of that pocket aces in their hand. They raise and re-raise their 3 and 8 to show confidence. These poker tells are difficult to catch, because it is hard to know for sure whether what your opponents are doing are genuine or fake.

Eye movements. Some poker players take a longer time in peeking at their cards when they are good cards, it's as if they couldn't believe their own eyes and they want to relish that moment forever. This type of tell is easy to catch that is why some poker professionals hide their eyes by wearing sunglasses and visors to games.

Facial expression. Although it's hard to maintain a poker face (emotionless, straight face), poker players insist in doing so. This is because a sudden change in their facial expression can give them away and destroy their plans. To prevent this, some poker players wear caps that could cover most of their face, or bow their head in such a way that their opponents wouldn't see it.

Arrangement of chips. Tight, conservative poker players stack their chips in an organized, neatly manner, and on the other hand, aggressive poker players just pile them in sloppy, messy stacks. You might want to observe you opponents' chip arrangement to give you a clue of what kind of players they are. This may help you read their plays.

Although tells are still considered important in poker, they're not that reliable, so be careful in watching tells.
